Phone us for Uninterruptible Power Services
Uninterruptible Power Supplies provide both preventative and reactive maintenance to all sizes and makes of Uninterruptible Power Supplies. Our network of engineers are fully trained and qualified to work on the UPS systems carrying out all works to the manufacturer’s standards.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies – why do I need maintenance? Uninterruptible Power Supplies are highly specialised equipment with thousands of components. Over time these components degrade and ultimately fail. The problem is compounded by the local environment that the UPS systems are situated in (e.g. temperature, humidity and dust levels).
Regular 6 monthly servicing of the UPS will keep your uninterruptible power supply at its peak condition and will allow any components that require replacing to be replaced before the UPS fails. Preventive maintenance is always cheaper and easier than reactive maintenance.
The batteries on an Uninterruptible Power supply are one of the most important elements of the system as they will provide the power backup if the mains power goes down. Batteries normally come with a design life of either 5 or 10 years but as the name suggests this is only a design life based on the batteries operating in optimal environmental and operational conditions. We therefore normally recommend that they are replaced during year 4 or year 8 (although some batteries may need replacing sooner).
Batteries should be checked and maintained regularly (in line with the 6 monthly maintenance) to monitor their condition. One of the best ways is to carry out an impedance test on the battery cells and compare this with the stated manufacturer’s figures.
UPS systems contain both AC and DC capacitors. A capacitor is an electronic device, which acts like a battery in that it provides a reservoir of instantaneous power as well as smoothing out the battery charging current. Over time, they become less effective and could cause an increase in ripple currents or even cause the inverter to fail. The normal design life for capacitors is approximately 5 years. Regular servicing of the UPS will allow for early indication of when the capacitors need changing allowing the work to be carried out as a planned maintenance programme.
